Cayuga deal locks Oklahoma tribe out of New York

The Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma will be blocked from returning to New York under a proposed land claim settlement.

The tribe is co-plaintiff in the 64,000-acre Cayuga land claim. But the other plaintiff, the Cayuga Nation, has reached a deal to end the case and block the Oklahoma tribe from acquiring land in New York.

"I foresee years of very expensive, lengthy litigation," Seneca-Cayuga Chief Paul Spicer told The Albany Times-Union.

The Cayuga Nation negotiated the deal with Gov. Eliot Spitzer (D) over the last five months. It calls for the tribe to receive no more than 10,000 acres in trust in two counties and for a casino somewhere in the state.
