Meeting set on Cayuga Nation land settlement

Lawmakers in Cayuga County, New York, will wait at least a week before taking a stand on the Cayuga Nation's proposed land claim settlement.

Lawmakers are meeting August 16 with Richard Rifkin, Gov. Eliot Spitzer's Indian affairs adviser. It was Rifkin who negotiated the deal with the tribe to limit its land-into-trust applications to 10,000 acres.

Officials in Cayuga and Seneca counties have expressed doubts about the proposal. The tribe has offered to drop all of its applications if the counties win a court challenge.
