The Skull Valley Band of Goshutes sued the Interior Department on Tuesday for rejecting a lease to store up to 44,000 tons of nuclear waste.
The tribe and its backers, a consortium of private energy companies, say the department's decision was based on politics. They are asking a federal judge to throw out two rulings affecting the controversial project.
The tribe has been receiving $200,000 a year from Private Fuel Storage while the process was moving along.
The amount would increase to $1 million a year once the storage facility is built.
The tribe and PFS received a license from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to proceed. But DOI's decisions effectively killed the project.
