Waste dump on reservation could be nation's first

The Skull Valley Goshute Reservation in Utah could be the first place in the nation -- aside from nuclear reactors -- to host highly radioactive waste.

The tiny tribe has a lease agreement store up to 44,000 tons of waste on 500 acres of the reservation. The deal could bring million of revenue to the impoverished community.

Not all within the tribe support the facility. A vocal faction has been fighting the tribe's chairman, Leon Bear, who signed the lease and is under a federal indictment for theft and tax fraud.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is expected to issue a decision on the facility soon. Observes say a ruling could come this month.
