Goshute chairman indicted for alleged theft
Thursday, December 18, 2003

The chairman of the Skull Valley Goshute Tribe of Utah has been indicted on federal charges of fraud, theft and tax.

Leon Bear and four other tribal leaders were charged in a multi-part indictment handed down on Wednesday. Bear faces six counts, including theft of tribal and federal funds and filing of false tax returns. The others were charged with theft and bank fraud.

Bear was the primary backer of a plan to store up to 18,000 tons of nuclear waste on the tribe's reservation. The state and some tribal members oppose the plan.
