Native environmental groups are part of a coalition that is fighting a proposed nuclear waste dump on the Skull Valley Goshute Reservation in Utah.
Led by the Public Citizen and Nuclear Information and Resource Service, the coalition includes 21 Native groups, like the Indigenous Environmental Network, as well as members of the tribe who don't support the repository. Other Native activists, including Winona LaDuke, have spoken out against the plan.
Chairman Leon Bear, who just pleaded guilty to tax fraud, signed a deal with a consortium of eight private utility companies to store up to 44,000 tons of waste on the reservation. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is set to decide whether to grant a license to the facility.
