Goshute nuclear waste facility still controversial

The Skull Valley Goshute Tribe of Utah is closer than ever to hosting the first nuclear waste dump in Indian Country.

The tribe's partner, Private Fuel Storage, won approval to store up to 44,000 tons of highly radioactive waste on the reservation. The project will bring an untold amount of money, believed to be in the millions, for the small and impoverished tribe.

But some tribal members, state politicians, Native activists and environmentalists are trying to stop the project. They say the facility will be unsafe and prone to terrorist attacks. Some accuse the nuclear industry of "environmental racism" by going after tribes to host the waste.

The tribe is still waiting on approval from the Bureau of Indian Affairs to lease 840 acres of the reservation for the project.
