Goshute waste site offered to Energy Department

The backers of a nuclear waste facility on the Skull Valley Goshute Reservation in Utah are offering to sell space at the site to the Energy Department.

Private Fuel Storage, a consortium of eight private utilities, said the government could use the site as a way to avoid liability for failing to store nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain. Since that project is way behind schedule, the government faces $50 billion in claims from the nuclear industry.

PFS has won a license to store up to 44,000 tons of nuclear waste on the reservation. The state of Utah is trying to block the project from moving forward.
