The Nuclear Regulatory Commission on Monday issued the first license for a nuclear waste facility located in Indian Country.
The NRC approved the license for Private Fuel Storage, a consortium of utility companies who want to store up to 44,000 tons of radioactive waste on the Skull Valley Goshute Reservation outside of Salt Lake City. The license requires PFS to meet certain conditions before started construction of the facility.
State politicians and some tribal members oppose the waste dump, saying it will harm the environment and cause safety, health and other hazards. But they have lost nearly every attempt to stop the facility from moving forward.
Leon Bear, the dispute chairman of the tribe, signed a lease with PFS to accept the waste. Terms of the deal are being kept secret, even from members of the tribe.
