Former Congressman Bob Ney, Republican of Ohio, was sentenced to 30 months in prison for his role in the Jack Abramoff scandal.
Ney pleaded guilty to accepting bribes in exchange for official acts. In the most well-known incident, he took money from Texas tribes and promised to write legislation to reopen their casinos.
Federal prosecutors had recommended a 27-month sentence.U.S. District Judge Ellen S. Huvelle increased it, citing Ney's betrayal of the public. She agreed to have him enter an alcohol rehabilitation program.
Ney is the first member of Congress who was indicted as part of the scandal. Several former Congressional aides have pleaded guilty.
