The Native American Caucus of the California Democratic Party voted 24-13 on a resolution that calls for reform of the Indian Civil Rights Act of 1968.
The resolution seeks to address the lack of recourse for Native Americans who have been disenrolled by their tribes. An estimated 1,500 California Indians have been taken off the rolls in recent years.
Supporters of the California Native American Justice and Equal Opportunity Legislative Initiative include Robert Edwards, a delegate to the caucus. He was removed from the Enterprise Rancheria after serving as vice chairman.
The resolution will now be considered by the state party.
