California Indians cite growing disenrollments

California Indians say more and more tribes are disenrolling their own people.

The Enterprise Rancheria kicked 72 people out after they signed a recall petition against tribal leaders. The Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians has removed more than 200 people from the rolls The Jamul Band of Kumeyaay Indians has moved to disenroll more than a fifth of its membership.

"The victims of disenrollment are growing in number and are more organized and motivated than ever before to end the injustice of this outrageous act by one Indian against another," Robert Edwards, the former vice chairman of the Enterprise Rancheria, told The Chico Enterprise-Record.

Edwards went before a tribal hearing yesterday to fight for his membership. As the hearing took place, the American Indian Rights and Resources Organization held a protest.
