Money wasn't a factor in the disenrollment of more than 130 people, the chairman of the Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians said.
Chairman Marc Macarro said the tribe has a fundamental right to decide its membership.
That right was upheld by a state appeals court decision that threw out a lawsuit filed
by former members of the tribe.
The ousted Pechangas say they were kicked out because the tribe is greedy. The tribe distributes per capita payments to tribal members. With fewer people on the rolls, the payments to the remaining members will be higher.
A second lawsuit filed by the Pechanga plaintiffs claims they are owed at least $38 million in per capita payments.
