A bill to impose fines and penalties for trespassing on reservations in California was pulled by its sponsor.
SB 331 was supported by the Barona Band of Mission Indians and other tribes. They said it would help maintain law and order on reservations.
But disenrolled Indians said it would have given tribes more power to punish political opponents.
They lobbied lawmakers to pull the bill.
Sen. Gloria Romero, a Democrat who sponsored the measure, agreed to withdraw the proposal. She said it had been "misconstrued."
