Janklow cites diabetes in manslaughter appeal

Former South Dakota governor and U.S. congressman Bill Janklow filed a brief to challenge his conviction of felony manslaughter.

Janklow is raising his diabetes as a defense for the August 6 accident that killed Randy Scott, a motorcyclist. He says the jury should have been allowed to conclude he was ""legally unconscious" due to his low blood sugar level.

The appeal to the state Supreme Court also raises other challenges. Janklow says the jury should not have heard about his past driving record, which includes speeding.

Janklow served just 100 days in a state jail for his crime.
