There's "no excuse" for the death outgoing Rep. Bill Janklow (R) caused, a council member for the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe said.

"A lot of people I know with way lesser crimes, when they got convicted, they got punished. I have a lot of respect for the man, but there's no excuse for what he did," Louis DuBray told The Sioux Falls Argus Leader.

American Indian Movement (AIM) activist Russell Means said he was "sad" to hear Janklow was convicted of second-degree felony manslaughter and three misdemeanors. "Bill had promised to me that he would hold a congressional investigation into the rampant graft and corruption ongoing at Pine Ridge. Now, I have to reassess where that will go," he told the paper.

Janklow was convicted by a jury on all counts related to a fatal August 16 car accident that took the life of motorcyclist Randy Scott, 55. He will be sentenced January 20. He faces a total of 11 years in prison.
