Russell Means: Power 'got the best' of Janklow
Monday, September 8, 2003

"When [American Indian Movement activist] Russell Means heard that Rep. Bill Janklow, R-S.D., was facing manslaughter charges for allegedly speeding, running a stop sign and fatally colliding with a motorcyclist, his first reaction was pity.

Honest.

For all those familiar with the decades-old animosity between Janklow and the Indian community, that might seem absurd.

Means said the attorney prosecuting Janklow already is giving him special treatment. When the prosecutor handled a similar case recently, Means said, the defendant was jailed pending trial. Janklow is free.

But Means' voice betrayed his sorrow over the mess that Janklow has made of his life.

"I don't know. I feel it's sad," he said when asked how he feels about the situation."
