Former U.S. Congressman John Thune (R) of South Dakota says he will decide in a few days the future of his political career.

Some Republicans want him to run against Sen. Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) next year. But others don't think he can beat the minority leader.

Others are pressuring him to run for the House seat being vacated by Rep. Bill Janklow (R), who was convicted on Monday of felony manslaughter. Thune held the seat before running against Sen. Tim Johnson (D) in 2002. He lost by a few hundred votes. Johnson won with the help of Indian voters.

Janklow's official resignation date is January 20, 2004, the day he will be sentenced by a judge.
