The chairman of the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe said outgoing Rep. Bill Janklow (R), former governor of South Dakota, was bound to get into an accident "sooner or later."

"With his driving record, it was something that was bound to happen," Leonard Eller told The Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Jean Paul Roy, a tribal council member, questioned whether Janklow, who was found guilty of second-degree manslaughter on Monday, will be punished for hitting and killing a man with his car. "Is he going to get the maximum or slapped on the hand and sent to a golf course for three months?" he asked. Janklow faces a maximum of 11 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. "To him, I don't think [a fine] matters. He's got deep pockets," said Roy.

Janklow went to trial in Flandreau, near the tribe's headquarters. There were no Native Americans on the jury.
