MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 2002

The five Nez Perce bands who refused to be confined to a reservation in Idaho were almost near their final destination of Canada in late September 1877.

But after a recent skirmish with the U.S. Army, the bands were weakened. At the Bear Paw Battlefield, 40 miles south of the border, they were finally caught.

The Seventh Calvary attacked the Nez Perce village on September 30. The battle continued until Chief Joseph gave his famous "I will fight no more forever" speech on October 5.
