The Billings Gazette continues its ongoing series on the Nez Perce War of 1877.

The war and its battles were fought by five Nez Perce bands who refused to be confined to a reservation in Idaho. The bands entered Montana in late July of 1877 on their ill-fated quest to reach Canada.

Today's stories describe the Nez Perce's entrance into the Yellowstone National Park, which had just been created. The park was used to avoid settlers, who told the Army where the tribe was headed.

While going through the park, the Nez Perce bands learned that the Crow Tribe wouldn't provide assistance. The Crows feared war with whites and the Army.

The Nez Perce eventually left the park and continued the journey to Canada. The bands were almost trapped by the Army but made a daring escape through a canyon.
