MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 2002

The Nez Perce Tribe of Idaho is hosting its annual pipe ceremony to mark one of the battles of the Nez Perce War of 1877.

The war was fought by five Nez Perce bands who refused to be confined to a reservation. The bands entered Montana in late July of 1877 on their ill-fated quest to reach Canada.

The pipe ceremony takes place Friday at the Canyon Creek Monument, near where the Battle of Canyon Creek was fought on September 13, 1877. The Army caught up to the bands and chased them through the canyon.
