Editorial: Mediation key to resolving Cobell case
Monday, November 3, 2003

The leaders of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee should push the federal government to mediate the Indian trust fund lawsuit, The Denver Post says in an editorial.

Mediation is supported by the plaintiffs in the case and tribal leaders, the paper points out. "The idea stalled, though, because the Bush administration wouldn't support it," the paper says.

Sens. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.) and Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) have introduced a bill to settle the case but it "is not - at least yet - the right solution," the paper says. "But the senators should continue to push for an alternative way to resolve the case. They should not, however, let Interior continue its stalling tactics."
