Herbert Fenster, the attorney representing Secretary of Interior Gale Norton in the trust fund case, had to drop his $500 an hour fee to just $200 in order to be reimbursed by the Department of Justice.

Fenster is one of dozens of attorneys getting paid with taxpayer funds. "Every major law firm is representing someone in this case," he tells The Washington Post's Hearsay column. "It is kind of sad. In all my years in Washington, I've never seen anything like it."

Fenster's firm, McKenna Long & Aldridge, has been paid $491,538 so far in the case.
