Bill could strip DOI of trust fund management
MONDAY, JULY 14, 2003

Some members of Congress are considering a bill that would shift trust fund management to the Department of Interior or create a separate commission to handle trust claims, The Denver Post reports.

The paper says Rep. Mark Udall (D-Colo.), Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) and others are working on the bill. The paper does not say when the lawmakers might introduce their package.

Tribes have been working on their own revisions to a bill McCain and Daschle introduced last year. They want to create an undersecretary for Indian affairs and clarify the standards to be applied to the trust.
