Trust fund accounting plan scrutinized
The ink was barely dry on the Bush administration's plan for an historical accounting before the criticism rolled in.

An investigator in the case which spurred the accounting said the 10-year, $2.4 billion effort was basically doomed to fail because it lacked specifics, was based on faulty premises and ignored the best interests of 500,000 Indian beneficiaries. Court monitor Joseph S. Kieffer III also questioned pending legislation that would limit the government's responsibilities to the account holders.

That was the backdrop for a profile of banker Elouise Cobell, the lead plaintiff in the trust fund class action. Cobell was interviewed by ABC's Sam Donaldson for a new, late-night television program.

Chinook Nation denied federal status
The answer was no, then yes and now no again. After decade of waiting, the Chinook Nation of Washington was denied federal recognition.

Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb revoked a final decision by his predecessor to make the ruling. Kevin Gover's January 2001 determination, which itself was a reversal of his predecessor's preliminary one, had been questioned by Bureau of Indian Affairs staff and another recognized tribe.
