Lawmakers to rally for Virginia tribal recognition
Tuesday, November 6, 2007

Sen. Jim Webb (D-Virginia), Rep. Jim Moran (D-Virginia) and Rep. Bobby Scott (D-Virginia) will hold a rally on Thursday to call for recognition of six Virginia tribes.

H.R. 1294 has already passed the House. It would extend federal recognition to the Chickahominy Tribe, the Chickahominy Indian Tribe – Eastern Division, the Upper Mattaponi Tribe, the Rappahannock Tribe, the Monacan Nation and the Nansemond Tribe.

Joined by Virginia tribal leaders, the lawmakers are pushing the Senate to action on the bill. Supporters are hoping for passage this year, which marks the 400th anniversary of the Jamestown settlement and the tribes that helped European settlers.

The rally takes place at 10am in Room SC-6. of the U.S. Capitol.
