No rush for Virginia recognition bill in Senate
Thursday, May 10, 2007

Sen. Jim Webb (D-Virginia) and Sen. John Warner (R-Virginia) are putting the brakes on the Virginia tribal recognition.

H.R.1294, the Thomasina E. Jordan Indian Tribes of Virginia Federal Recognition Act, passed the House by a unanimous voice vote on Tuesday. But Webb and Warner aren't ready to make a decision on the bill.

Webb is still studying the issue, an aide said, and wouldn't be rushed to judgment just because the Jamestown 400th anniversary is approaching. And Warner has concerns about a provision that bars the tribes from engaging in gaming.
