Sen. Obama meets Eastern Cherokee leaders

Sen. Barack Obama (D-Illinois), a 2008 Democratic presidential hopeful, met with leaders of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in North Carolina last week.

Obama held a private, hourlong meeting with about 25 people. Included in the group were Lynne Harlan, a spokesperson for the tribe; Brandon Stephens, the tribe’s building and construction manager; and Annette Clapsaddle, assistant to Principal Chief Michell Hicks.

“I have met a lot of politicians, and he is the most impressive person I have ever met,” Harlan told The Asheville Citizen-Times.

Harlan said Obama discussed tribal sovereignty and "how the federal government needs to consider our sovereignty when they make legislative decisions." She said she was impressed with his knowledge.
