Michigan parents in court over alleged peyote use

Three Michigan parents were in court last week facing allegations that they are giving their children peyote.

One father, a member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, said he has a right to use peyote as a member of the Native American Church. His 7-year-old daughter tested positive for mescaline use.

The girl's mother, also a tribal member, wants the practice to stop. She says peyote use it not a traditional Ottawa or Chippewa practice.

In 2003, the father was ordered to stop giving peyote to his son, who was 4 years old at the time. A family court judge is trying to sort out the dispute. Two other parents are also involved.
