Blast from the Past: NBC segment on Cobell

After Elouise Cobell of the Blackfeet Nation filed her class action trust fund lawsuit in 1996, NBC News ran a segment about the case for its "Fleecing of America" series.

J.Rhoan has an archived copy of the segment posted on his blog. It includes a short interview with then-Interior Department solicitor Ed Cohen, of the Clinton administration, who promises that Indian account holders will be paid.

"We're going to repay and were going to repay it with interest," the department's top lawyer said.

But when asked how much is owed, Cohen becomes cagey. "It's an overstatement to say hundreds of millions of dollars are missing," he said. "I don't think that's the case."
