DOI trust reform meeting set for Portland, Oregon

The Interior Department is holding a meeting next week in Portland, Oregon, to solicit input on a proposal overhaul of its Indian trust regulations.

The proposal would affect more than 600 pages of existing regulations. Nearly every issue, from leases to probate to land title, is covered.

There are also some new proposals, such as a controversial regulation to impose fees on tribes and individual Indians for trust services. The National Congress of American Indians has asked the Bush administration to eliminate this section.

The meeting at the Doubletree Hotel, Lloyd Center, takes place March 29.
