Blackfeet Nation seeks to reclaim police powers

Blackfeet Nation leaders say they will try to resume law enforcement duties on their Montana reservation.

The BIA took over the police force in February 2003 in response to numerous complaints. But tribal leaders say the BIA has failed to provide enough resources, causing the dismissal of dozens of cases.

Tribal members and reservation residents see things differently. A BIA review and interviews by The Missoulian found that most support the BIA even if there are some problems. They say a tribally-run police force is prone to corruption due to close relations among tribal members.
