Looking Cloud guilty for Anna Mae Aquash's murder

A federal jury in South Dakota found Arlo Looking Cloud guilty of the 1975 murder of American Indian Movement activist Anna Mae Pictou-Aquash.

The jury deliberated seven hours Friday before delivering the verdict. Looking Cloud will be sentenced April 23 and faces a mandatory life prison sentence.

The trial lasted five days last week .Jurors heard how Looking Cloud and two others took Aquash from Denver, Colorado, to South Dakota. Looking Cloud admitted being present when Aquash was shot in the head on the Pine Ridge Reservation in December 1975.

Her badly decomposed body was found February 1976. The murder went unsolved for 26 years, with speculation centering on the possibility of AIM involvement. Witnesses for the prosecution said AIM leaders were responsible for Aquash's death.

Looking Cloud's lawyer plans to appeal the verdict because he said the trial was about AIM, not about his client.

Aquash was a member of the Mi'kmaq Nation from Canada.
