The Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians in Michigan is seeing support for a proposed off-reservation casino.

The city council in Bessemer voted unanimously to support a casino and hotel at the Indianhead Mountain Ski Resort. Several leaders in Wakefield Township are also welcoming the project although they are waiting to hear from the public before stating an official position.

"I see it being a good thing, not only for the community, but especially for constituents in the township," one town board member said at a meeting on Tuesday, The Ironwood Daily Globe reported.

The tribe plans to purchase part of the resort and start the land-into-trust process for the casino portion. Approval from the state governor would presumably be required under the two-part determination provisions of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.

The tribe already operates the Lac Vieux Desert Resort and Casino. The resort is about 46 miles away.

Wakefield Township will host a public meeting at the resort on October 22.
