The $3.4 billion settlement to the Indian trust fund lawsuit has been included in the American Jobs and Closing Tax Loopholes Act, a bill that is expected to pass to Congress in the coming weeks.
The settlement is authorized by Section 607 of the bill. It provides $1.412 billion in payments to individual Indians and creates a $2 billion land consolidation program.
Votes could come in the House and the Senate before the end of the week.
That means Congress might meet a May 28 deadline imposed by Judge James Robertson
The American Jobs and Closing Tax Loopholes Act has been introduced as an amendment to H.R. 4213, a bill that previously passed the House and the Senate. It includes a number of tax credits for Indian Country.
