The $3.4 billion settlement to the Cobell trust fund
lawsuit will be the subject of meetings this week and next week in Montana and in South Dakota.
Today, lead plaintiff Elouise Cobell will meet with members of the Blackfeet Nation of Montana from 11:30am until 1:30pm at the New Eagle Shield Center in Browning. Cobell is Blackfeet.
On Saturday, the Great Plains Tribal Chairman's Association will host a panel discussion on the settlement at the Ramkota Convention Center in Rapid City, South Dakota, at 9am. Speakers include David Hayes, the deputy secretary of the Interior Department, and plaintiffs' attorneys Keith Harper, a member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, and Dennis M. Gingold.
On Monday, Cobell and plaintiffs' and attorney David Smith will be in Montana to meet with members of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. The will be at the Salish Kootenai College, Victor Charlo/Johnny Arlee Theater, in Pablo from 3pm to 7pm.
On Tuesday, Cobell and Smith head to the Fort Belknap Indian Community, where they will hold a meeting at the Little River Learning
Lodge in the Bee Gawn Hey and Si Si Rooms at Fort Belknap College from 1pm to 5pm.
On Wednesday, Cobell and Smith will meet with members of the Fort Peck Tribes from at the Silver Wolf Casino, Highway 25
East, Wolf Point, from 1pm to 5pm.
The settlement, which requires Congressional approval, provides $1.4 billion in payments to beneficiaries. It also creates a $2 billion land consolidation fund.
