County rejects Cayuga land claim settlement

The Native American Affairs Committee in Seneca County, New York, has rejected a land claim settlement with the Cayuga Nation.

The committee voted 4-1 to reject two proposals, including the tribe's recent offer to drop all of its land-into-trust applications if the county wins a court challenge. The original proposal to include the land-into-trust applications was also rejected.

The committee, however, voted to accept a proposal to block the tribe from reacquiring lands within its ancestral territory. The deal would still allow the tribe to pursue a casino in the Catskills.

The tribe gave Cayuga County and Seneca County until the end of August to respond to the latest offer.
