"iii''m leaning over the edge of the cliff when I talk about this subject because I am not an expert. But this layperson wonders about the whining coming from the domestic car manufacturers, who have lost billions of dollars and laid off thousands of workers when the answer seems so simple.
There are many new innovations in cars, too. It's exciting to shop even if you don't intend to buy. A few years ago, I found something I was very impressed with and would like in my next car: It was an equalization device that keeps your car from rolling when you make a quick turn. I know it works because once while on assignment for the Herald, I test-drove a car with one of those devices. The test car was one of the tall SUVs, and it simply was amazing.
So, how are the Fords and Chrysler with new innovations and gas-saving devices? Toyota, after all, has a hybrid SUV.
It is the combination of these innovations with reliability, safety technology, fuel economy and price that will entice buyers. It's not just the fact that you can plow through a mud field or be tough enough to carry a big load. That may be good enough for some people, but not the majority, I would guess.
So why aren't American car companies considering these factors?"
