A man from the Fort Peck Reservation in Montana was beaten to death while trying to help a woman who was involved in a domestic violence incident.

Kenneth Booth, 47, heard a female neighbor screaming at the El Rancho Motel, where he lived. When went to intervene, he was allegedly beaten by John Martell, 29.

Martell pleaded not guilty in tribal court to manslaughter, severe physical domestic abuse and disorderly conduct. He was said to be under the influence of drugs. He could face federal charges.

Booth was a Fort Peck tribal member.
