A law firm in Saskatchewan could receive $40 million of the $1.9 billion settlement for Native residential school students.

Tony Merchant and the Merchant Law Group claim to represent 10,000 former students. Merchant says 50 lawyers have worked on the case for more than a decade.

The Canadian government is proposing to pay former students for the physical, sexual, mental and emotional abuse they suffered at residential schools. About $100 million is set aside for lawyers.
