MAY 9, 2000

Three Native elders are walking from Edmonton to Ottawa to draw attention to residential school abuse. Canadian churches which administered the schools are currently the target of thousands of claims.

Recent polls have supported paying restitution but that the federal government should help the Churches out in the event of bankruptcy. 53% believe the churches should sell property to pay abuse claims and 80% believe Ottawa should help the Churches if they fall into bankruptcy.

One of the churches involved, the Anglican Church is near bankruptcy. Lawsuits cost the Church $1.5 last year and legal fees were $112,000 at the end of March.

The Anglican Church also released its own report on experimental nutrition and health programs carried out on aboriginal children without parental consent.

The elders stopped in Saskatoon on Monday.
