FRIDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2002

A judge in Canada has dismissed the Anglican Church from abuse suits of Aboriginals who attended government boarding schools.

The judge in Alberta said the church did not sign any contracts to run the schools. Only the Missionary Society, the independent corporate entity of the church, can be sued.

The decision affects claims by a reported 500 who attended residential schools in Alberta and the Northwest Territories. The federal government is still a defendant and has a liability of at least $1 billion in abuse suits throughout the country.
