MAY 16, 2001

A court in Saskatchewan dismissed a residential school lawsuit which the federal government brought to force the Anglican Church to pay part of a compensation award to an Aboriginal man.

The court said the man's claim was against the government and not the church.

There are thousands of lawsuits filed by Aboriginals alleging physical, sexual, mental and other abuse at residential schools. The government placed Natives in the schools, which were run by churches.
