Court allows residential school abuse class action

Canada's Supreme Court on Thursday rejected an appeal of a $2.3 billion class action filed by former students of a Native residential school.

The former students say they were abused at the Mohawk Institute Residential School in an attempt to "Christianize" them. They say they were beaten, intimidated and forbidden to speak their Native language.

The plaintiffs won a ruling [Text] from the Ontario Court of Appeal to proceed as a class action. The government and other defendants sought review of the decision but the Supreme Court denied the request.

Separately, a group of former students have filed a national $12.5 billion class action.
