Time: Goshute Band to get $100M for nuclear waste
Thursday, March 9, 2006
The Skull Valley Band of Goshutes will receive $100 million over 40 years for agreeing to store up to 44,000 tons of nuclear waste on the Utah reservation, according to Time Magazine. The tribe signed a deal with Private Fuel Storage, a consortium of utility companies, to store the radioactive waste on a small portion of the reservation. The facility was granted a 20-year license by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Leon Bear, the dispute chairman of the small tribe -- of 125 members, only about 25 live on the reservation -- hopes revenues will bring services and benefits to the impoverished community. Utah's Congressional delegation and state officials are trying everything they can to block the project. They have inserted riders into legislation in hopes of making it impossible to transport waste to the reservation. The state is appealing the NRC decision. Get the Story:
