"Harvard economist Jonathan Taylor will lecture Friday at the University of Montana on the economic impact of Indian gaming, a presentation that comes on the heels of stalled state-tribal gaming compact negotiations on the Flathead Reservation.
The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes and the state of Montana reached an impasse after the compact affecting all Class III gaming machines within reservation borders expired Nov. 30.
Taylor's lecture is scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday in Castles Arena at UM's Law School.
It's not just an Indian issue, Erin Shanley, a UM law student and Native American Law Student Association vice president, said on Wednesday. It's a statewide issue that people aren't usually informed of, and it's really important for the non-Indian community to be aware of, too.
The event is being sponsored by NALSA and the Salish and Kootenai tribes.
Taylor, director of the Taylor Policy Group in Cambridge, Mass., has done several in-depth studies of the impact of Indian gaming on tribes and surrounding non-Native communities.
In view of the current impasse between the state of Montana and several of the Montana Indian tribes on the renewal of a Class III gaming compact, severe economic disruption of both Indian and non-Indian gaming activities could result, said Neal DuBois, NALSA president."
