About 1,500 people attended the funeral of Nathan Goodiron, a member of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation who was killed in Afghanistan.
Goodiron, 25, was a National Guardsman who died in an attack on Thanksgiving Day. Gov. John Hoeven (R) called him a "true warrior and a true North Dakota hero."
The National Guard presented Goodiron's family the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was saluted by veterans from four states during the service, which lasted 4 1/2 hours, according to news reports. The casket viewing took several more hours.
Goodiron was buried in a cemetery on the Fort Berthold Reservation.
