Outgoing Navajo Nation Vice President Frank Dayish Jr. spoke publicly for the first time about his rift with President Joe Shirley Jr.

Dayish told the crowd at the Gallup Indian Medical Center why he decided to run against Shirley. He used a Navajo phrase that indicated he was unhappy with Shirley's leadership.

Speaking in Navajo, he said he launched his campaign so that Shirley wouldn't have asked him to be his running mate again. Dayish came in third in the primary.

Dayish cited Shirley's treatment of veterans as one area of disagreement. Since the election, Dayish's office has been virtually shut down by Shirley, preventing the distribution of money to veterans, his staff said.
