A group of Navajo women organized a march in response to comments allegedly made by a staffer to Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr.
The Women Against Racism say staff assistant Clinton Jim made disparaging remarks about Navajos of mixed ancestry. He allegedly said members of the Shirley team "are Navajo and they want to have Navajo all the way," The Gallup Independent reported.
The women said many Navajo children are of mixed heritage. "There's hardly any full-blooded children, youth," said Lousie Watch, 59. "We can't turn back, we have to keep going."
Shirley is running for re-election. His opponent is Lynda Lovejoy, who wants to be the first female president of the tribe.
